Basic Security Training

Many organizations, agencies and other private entities fall under the umbrella of security. From National Security, to Law Enforcement, to Firemen and Paramedics, Security Guard in Uniformto Loss Prevention to the lone security guard. They all share the same rules of basic security to prevent, observe and report.

The security guard’s concern is to protect persons and prevent damage or destruction to property. Prevention is the key.

If you observed a guy trying to climb a fence to enter private property, you should shout at them or turn on lights. Do anything lawful that would discourage him to trespass, don’t wait until they cross the fence.

Another typical situation might be: A person intends to steal from a store, but suddenly sees a uniformed security guard on patrol. The person leaves the store without stealing anything. The guard, simply by being in uniform, has prevented an incident.

If you can’t prevent an incident, the proper action is to observe and report.

You should:
  • Observe carefully and
  • Report immediately to the local law enforcement and/or your supervisor.
Basically:
BEFORE THE INCIDENT: The role is Prevention

DURING OR AFTER THE INCIDENT: The role is to Observe and Report

As security guards are trained and state certified to make an arrest, Bouncers on the hand are not necessarily authorized by their employer to arrest people but can cause an arrest to occur if they handle it within the proper guidelines. But Bouncers are almost never put into those situations instead they have the authority under public law to remove the person from the premises in a lawful manner. If Bouncer the utilizes the basic steps above, at the end of the day they could never good wrong.

Another part of basic security is developing relations with the local police. Your job is made easier if you have a good working relationship with the local police officers.

NEVER play “cop.” Bouncers who display a sense of professionalism and having the facts as to what actually happens come out on top with the local law enforcement.

DON’T MISLEAD PEOPLE. As there are more police officers working as Bouncers these days, some people may think that you are a police officer. DON’T do anything to encourage this false idea. Whenever the opportunity arises, make it a point to let them know that you are NOT a police officer, but security.

DURING AN EMERGENCY, you should not interfere with police officers who may be on the scene even if they are on the private property of the club. You should cooperate to the extent possible with them or you may be subject to arrest.

REMEMBER:
Your roles are different! A police office is charged with the enforcement of laws in a city or county. A security guard is responsible for protecting only the specific people or property he is hired to protect.
