Learning From The Best In The Business
Art inmates life, then Hollywood executive get a hold of it and blows it out of per portion for entertainment purposes. Case in point, the movie Roadhouse starring Patrick Swayze. No other movie demonstrates what nightclub security is all about. But again Hollywood becomes bored with the concept and begins to elaborate into the world of imagination with the plot.

But if we were to look beyond the chessy entertainment we can focus on what is important about the movie, the concept of being a Bouncer. James Dalton played by Swayze teaches us many things to be a successful Bouncer.

Dalton is not a huge guy, in fact those who have only heard of him then finally meet him have told him that they thought that he 'd be bigger. He is of average height and build with no perturbing muscles you can say that he works out with weights but he's fit.

He does Ti Chi not for vanity but for sanity. He punches a heavy bag from time to time, but it appears that he does it out of anger.

You can tell that he likes his responsibilities as a Cooler as he is his own boss who carries his own medical records with him.

He's a philosopher who not only practices what he believes but trains other Bouncers who are heaving a difficulty handling undesirable patrons his philosophy:

1. Never under estimate anyone or any situation.

2. Take it outside. (If someone gives you any trouble inside take it outside)

3. Be Nice, until it's time not to be nice.

If you did not know the above before, there you have it plain and simple. And just so there is no misunderstanding to this philosophy let's break it down even more starting with number one.

Never under estimate anyone or any situation.
When dealing with an undesirable patron always beware of their demeanor, words and actions. Size up the situation around you. Are there other patrons involved or want to get involved? Who's behind you and do you have assistance?

Take it outside. (if someone gives you any trouble inside, take it outside)
Any and all negative verbal or physical confrontation must be taken outside of the club away from the other patrons inside and outside coming in the club. You don't want to give the indication that the club has a violent atmosphere to were it will disturb others. Patrons understand that it is a nightclub and situations can occur, but it is up to you to display a no tolerance attitude (discreetly as possible) in a professional manner.

Be Nice, until it's time not to be nice.
Always approach an undesirable patron with the up most respect no manner what. This can only be achieve however by not taking anything a patron says or does personal, it's only a job just do it. This will also keep you in the professional mode as other patrons may be watching in how you handle the situation. Also stay one step ahead of the undesirable patron. If the patron continues to be resistant to your request to calm down or to be escorted out, your niceness with the patron as be exhausted. Escort the patron with assistance in a professional manner if possible.

Roadhouse made in 1989 is to this day remains the best of the best training video for Bouncers for the three reason above. Sure there are other "Training" videos on the market mostly about fighting in a bar, but this is before things can get out of control. Remember that prevention makes for a successful Bouncer.
