24 cops break up Madison Avenue brawl; 'the entire bar was fighting'

Fights inside Madison Avenue, a popular campus-area nightclub, resulted in two dozen officers descending on the melee early Sunday morning, Madison police reported.

Fights inside Madison Avenue, a popular campus-area nightclub, resulted in two dozen officers descending on the melee early Sunday morning, Madison police reported.

Only one person was arrested at the nightclub at 624 University Ave., following the brawl that was reported at 1:50 a.m. Sunday.

"The original caller told the dispatcher that the entire bar was fighting," said Madison police spokesman Joel DeSpain.

Seventeen Madison Police Department officers went to the club, along with five officers from the University of Wisconsin-Madison Police Department, one officer from the Shorewood Police Department and one officer from the Capitol Police Department.

Bouncers told responding officers several fights broke out at once inside the club, which was the scene of a brawl involving about 25 people at bar closing time on April 19.

It wasn't clear how many people were involved in the melee this time, or what motivated the fighting, but the fight escalated to a point where a bouncer was choked and punched by one patron when bouncers tried to clear the club.

The one arrested patron was discovered to have a box cutter in his possession.

Theodore D. Taylor, 19, Madison, was arrested for carrying a concealed weapon, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct while armed, and an underaged person having alcohol on a licensed premise.

Taylor allegedly was throwing punches at the bouncers as they tried to regain control of the club.

"An employee of the club suffered a superficial hand wound when he grabbed onto the box cutter which was in the suspect's pocket," DeSpain said.

Madison Avenue faces the possibility of losing its liquor license, with the city's Alcohol License Review Committee asking the city attorney's office to schedule a non-renewal hearing for the club, as well as two other campus-area bars, Johnny O's Restaurant and Bar and Ram Head Ratskeller.
