Woman tells Evansville police she was robbed by man who gave her a ride

Evansville police are looking for the person who a woman said punched her in the face and robbed her after giving her a ride home early Wednesday.

Police Bar

According to a police department incident report, police arrived in the 100 block of East Iowa Street about 1:40 a.m., just a few minutes after the alleged robbery occurred, and spoke to the 25-year-old victim.

The victim said she left work at the Busy Body Lounge about 1 a.m. and found that the wires to her car battery were cut, the report said. She told a bouncer that she was about to walk home — about a 23-minute walk — but the bouncer suggested that she hitch a ride with a black male customer.

So the victim rode with the suspect in his gray Jeep Grand Cherokee, the report said, and he stopped at Iowa Street and Heildelbach Avenue, which is at the corner of her block. That’s when the suspect grabbed her purse and, after a brief struggle, punched her in the face, the report said.

The suspect eventually took about $30 and her “checkbook-sized wallet,” the victim told police. Police said they saw a contusion on her left cheek and a cut on her lower lip.

The victim’s boyfriend, who was waiting outside for her, reportedly heard the victim scream and began chasing the Jeep, which was last seen driving south on Heidelbach Avenue, the report said.

The victim described the vehicle as being a late-1990s or 2000 model year with cloth seats and wood grain on the inside of the doors.
