Witnesses credited for arrest of alleged gunman

Two witnesses are being applauded for bravery after they helped police chase down an armed man who had allegedly shot a bouncer twice in the leg only minutes earlier at a Granville Street nightclub early Sunday morning.

The man was arrested several blocks away from the shooting and was charged criminally yesterday.

The incident began around 12:30 a.m. Sunday, when a man got into an argument with the doorman at Barcelona nightclub on the 1100 block of Granville Street.

According to Vancouver police, the man left but returned shortly afterward and allegedly fired several shots at the bouncer outside the club. The 39-year old doorman was hit twice in the leg.

A witness and a doorman from a nearby club ran after the suspect, as did two police officers who were in the club on a walk-through.

At one point during his attempted escape, the armed man is accused of turning around and pointing the gun at his pursuers, but the gun didnít fire.

Hassan Omar Hassan, 32, of Calgary has been charged with five counts, including attempted murder.
